Losing one or more teeth can profoundly impact a person’s life. While missing teeth impact your smile and self-confidence, they also affect your ability to chew and can even change how you speak. It’s important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible to maintain dental alignment and the integrity of your entire tooth structure. Dental bridges provided by Dr. Franklin Landers are an effective solution for restoring both aesthetics and functionality.
A dental bridge is a dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth, filling the gap in a dental arch. It is generally supported by two natural teeth, one on either side of the space. Alternatively, dental implants can also be used to anchor a bridge. The dental bridge is made with one or more prosthetic teeth that are anchored in place by your natural teeth or implants.
There are three common dental bridge types, each one meeting different needs. A traditional bridge is the most common type. It involves creating a crown on the natural teeth on both sides of the gap. Cantilever bridges are used if you only have one natural tooth next to the missing tooth. Last, an implant-supported bridge is the perfect solution for missing multiple teeth. These bridges rely on dental implants instead of natural teeth.
Dental bridges offer all these benefits:Â
The dental bridge procedure typically consists of two dental visits, but some instances may require additional dentist appointments. For example, if you are going with implant-supported bridges and don’t already have your dental implants, you must go through this prolonged process before the bridge can be installed. Once the dental implant process is complete, you’re ready to start the dental bridge process.
During your first visit, Dr. Landers will prepare your teeth to anchor your bridge. His team will take impressions of your teeth to ensure the bridge is customized for your mouth. A temporary bridge will be placed while the permanent bridge is being made in a lab. At your second visit, Dr. Landers will remove the temporary bridge and carefully fit your permanent bridge before cementing it into place.
When cared for properly, dental bridges can last 5 to 15 years or even longer. How long your dental bridge lasts depends on oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, during which Dr. Landers will monitor its condition.
Caring for your dental bridge isn’t much different from caring for your natural teeth. Practicing good oral hygiene at home will help your bridge stay beautiful, and regular dental visits also play a crucial role. Consider avoiding hard foods or foods that are sticky and chewy because they can put stress on the bridge and neighboring teeth.
