For many seniors, losing or damaging one or more teeth can significantly impact their quality of life. Enjoying their favorite foods can be more challenging, and missing teeth can also affect speech and self-confidence. Fortunately, modern dentistry and Dr. Franklin Landers offer an excellent solution to tooth loss: dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures, dental implants function nearly identically to natural teeth, vastly improving how people live and function.
Dental implants can replace one tooth or multiple teeth. A single implant is designed to replace a single tooth. Implants are made using three components: a titanium post embedded into the jawbone to serve as the “root,” an abutment placed atop the titanium post, and a porcelain crown that is the part of the new tooth that shows above the gumline.
Once Dr. Landers determines that dental implants are a good fit for you, he will place the titanium post into your jawbone via a surgical procedure. The screw needs three to six months to completely fuse with the jaw in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has healed, the abutment and porcelain crown are added to complete the dental implant process.
Dental implants offer comfort and stability that conventional dentures can’t provide. While traditional dentures are an affordable option for replacing all of your teeth, dental implants or implant-supported dentures won’t become loose or cause your gums to be irritated. Rather, they are firmly anchored and have a natural feel. Moreover, it’s easier to enjoy all the foods you love without worrying about the slippage that often comes with dentures.
Dental implants have many benefits, making them superior to conventional dentures in function and convenience.
To qualify for dental implants, patients must have good oral health, including healthy gums. If you have gum disease, that must be addressed before the implant process can start. A person wanting dental implants must also have adequate bone density to support the implant. If there isn’t enough bone density, Dr. Landers may be able to do a bone graft to stimulate growth in your jawbone and add support for a dental implant.
If you’re missing only one tooth, a dental implant can replace that tooth. However, patients who have lost several teeth or need full mouth restoration can opt for implant-supported dentures or bridges. For this option, implants are placed at both ends of a gap in the smile to serve as anchors for a bridge. To create full-arch fixed dentures, at least four implants are needed, whether for the upper or lower arch.
