At the office of Dr. Franklin A. Landers of Boynton Beach, Florida, we excel in managing a wide range of dental problems, from general to cosmetic dentistry. But many don’t realize that we also offer emergency dentistry situations, such as chipped teeth, oral injuries, fractures, and much more! But what do you need to do when these things happen? Let’s explore four common dental emergencies and how to manage them now!
Four common dental emergencies and what to do when they occur:
- Chipped or broken teeth: If an adult natural tooth is inadvertently chipped or shattered, it’s important to act fast and seek dental care as soon as possible. We advise you to apply a cold compress directly to the affected area and rinse your mouth with a warm salt water solution in the interim. If there is any bleeding, we recommend using pressure with gauze as you head to our office for further assistance.Â
- Knocked-out tooth: A knocked-out tooth is considered a dental emergency because time is crucial in saving the tooth. While you’re on your way to the dentist, try to put the tooth back into its socket and keep it there with some gauze or a clean cloth. If this isn’t feasible, moisten the teeth with milk or saliva until you can get to the dentist.
- Severe toothache: A severe toothache may indicate an infection or other underlying concerns that require immediate attention. In these cases, we recommend rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and taking over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Then, call our office for an emergency appointment.
- Lost filling or dental crown: Losing a filling or restorative crown can be uncomfortable and leave your tooth vulnerable to further damage. To temporarily relieve discomfort, apply clove oil or over-the-counter dental cement to the affected area until you can see your dentist.
