What Are Dentures?

Dentures are an attractive, cost-effective dental solution for patients looking to restore any number of missing teeth. The custom-made appliances are designed to specifically fit into the mouth to give each patient a natural and flawless smile. They’re made from an acrylic resin and best of all, the process is quick and minimally invasive – so you won’t have to worry about undergoing surgery or waiting through a long recovery time.

Benefits of Dentures

Custom denture sets provide patients with a variety of unique benefits, including:

  • Natural-looking restoration
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Customized for you
  • Fast and minimally invasive procedure
  • Enhanced chewing and speaking ability
  • Can last up to 10 years with proper care
  • Provides support for facial muscles
  • Can improve confidence

Our Denture Types

Denture teeth are made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of materials. Dentures can be designed to fit over endodontically treated teeth, and a complete denture can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit.

Complete Dentures

If you’re missing one or both arches of teeth, complete (conventional) dentures may be the solution you need. To ensure a comfortable fit, Dr. Landers will use advanced imaging technology to create an impression of your smile. In just a couple of weeks, you can transform your appearance and smile with confidence again.

For patients missing the majority of their teeth in their upper jaw, we’ll use an upper denture. This is an acrylic, flesh-colored appliance that covers the palate (roof of your mouth). And for our patients missing a majority of their teeth in their lower jaw, we’ll utilize a lower denture. This type of denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture. You’ll wear these for the first several months after your extraction. This way, you’ll have teeth while awaiting the arrival of your permanent dentures.

The Dentures Process

Receiving your customized dentures typically requires two visits to our Boynton Beach dental office, usually over the course of one month or several weeks. To begin, Dr. Landers will take highly accurate impressions of your teeth in order to create a precise and comfortable denture fit.

Several “try-on” appointments may be necessary to ensure the proper fit, shape, and color. At your final appointment, Dr. Landers will precisely adjust and place the dentures, making sure they fit comfortably and look natural.

It’s important to remember that once you first receive your dentures that increased saliva flow, some soreness, and difficulty with eating and speaking are normal. However, these side effects should subside quickly as your muscles and tissues get used to your new dental restoration.

Denture Care

Your dentures can last for up to 10 years or more if you properly care for them. Luckily, your dentures are easy to maintain.

Cleanings & Brushing

It’s important to maintain the integrity of your dentures by thoroughly cleaning them twice a day and after each meal. To properly clean them, remove them from your mouth and gently brush all surfaces. Don’t brush too hard, as this can wear down the unique edges and teeth created to comfortably fit in your mouth.

Overnight Care

Every night, you should remove your dentures and place them in a denture-cleaning solution. Keeping them in this solution overnight will help them retain their custom shape and stay fresh. If you sleep with your dentures in, it can lead to excess wear on your jawbones, especially if you tend to clench or grind your teeth in your sleep.

Routine Denture Maintenance

Another important step in increasing the lifespan of your dentures is to regularly visit Dr. Landers at least twice a year for routine checkups. During these visits, one of our dental hygienists will professionally clean your teeth and denture set.

After we’ve removed any harmful bacteria, our experienced Boynton Beach dentist will examine your dentures and gums to ensure they’re healthy. He’ll also address any issues with the fit and comfort of your dentures during these appointments.
